Channel Islands blacklisted as tax haven in US
The U.S. district of Columbia has blacklisted the Channel Islands as a tax haven.
It’s part of a plan to highlight international jurisdictions they consider to be used by people trying to avoid paying tax.
D.C want to use the list to deter businesses there dealing with businesses in Jersey.
Columbia say the islands lack transparency; other islands included on the list are Gibraltar and the Isle of Man and the British Virgin Islands.
The Chief Minister has said The States will be working with authorities in D.C to try and remove the islands from the list and expressed dislike at the term tax haven.
The list is not a new list, but a clarification of which jurisdictions the District of Columbia thinks meets its existing criteria. In including Guernsey, the District of Columbia uses information that is not up-to-date. We will be working with appropriate authorities in the District of Columbia to update the information, to encourage them to revise the list, and to challenge the outdated and inappropriate label of ‘tax havens’ that they have applied to the list.
